How to save money as a new homeowner

shutterstock_105669041You’ve just moved into your newly built Bucci Homes, boxes have been unpacked, clothes and decor hung, and you’re starting to settle in, but now the bills of owning a home start coming. Here are a few tips to help you save money to work towards a life being mortgage free.

Do it yourself decor

Sure you could hire an interior decorator to help you pick out the perfect home decor, but what fun is that? You can save yourself a lot of money by doing a lot of things yourself. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out Pinterest or for those of you who like a tangible resource – decorating magazine. Instead of making high ticket purchases, take time to shop flea markets, antique stores and other fun places that sell unique items that can really make an impact on your home decor.

Consider purchasing a chest freezer

Although you need to spend money on the initial purchase, a chest freezer can save you money in the long run because you can buy in bulk. Pay attention to weekly sales and specials at your grocery stores or plan monthly trips to Costco to stock up. Instead of running to the grocery store last minute because you don’t know what to make for dinner, you can have quick dinner options at home.

Track your finances and create a budget.

Not very exciting but it’s a must-do before anything else. If you don’t know where your money is going you won’t be able to make the necessary changes. You might want to talk to a financial planner. There’s also a lot of information online that you can access for free.
