Decorate with paint this season

The leaves are changing colours – it’s a sure sign that summer is over and the holiday season will soon be here. It’s time to start thinking about blissful cocooning in home comfort.  But you look around and something doesn’t feel right. Your home needs a change. But what to do? Try painting. A new coat of paint is easy and inexpensive and can create whatever atmosphere you like, whether you want high energy or calm, relaxing ambiance. And don’t limit yourself to interior walls but consider painting older furniture, or add some accent colour to trims and doors. You may want to totally redo the exterior or the garage doors, at least.

Here are a few tips to get started:

  • Give the illusion of a lower ceiling by painting the ceiling darker colours. This helps create a very intimate space.
  • To upgrade to a more modern look, paint the walls and trim the same colour. Try using a flat paint for the walls and a semi-gloss for the trim.
  • Have a tight space? Open it up by painting the ceiling a lighter version of the hue painted on the room’s walls or …white always works.
  • If you have an awkward wall, or one on an angle, soften it by painting it one solid colour.
  • Paint your front door a statement colour – you’ve seen them – they stand out from the rest fo the house. Try a colour you don’t see every day.
  • Don’t have time to redo the entire home’s exterior? Then just freshen up the trim. White or rich neutrals, can update the look.
  • Shutters and porch gables are the perfect place to decorate with paint.

Once the decision is made on what to paint, choosing colours can be daunting. Take advantage of the hundreds of paint selections at the local paint store and perhaps get some advice for the look you want. And don’t forget to chill the white wine to celebrate when you’re done.
